Current Wrestling Team Events
Parent Meeting - Thursday 11/19/09 - 5:30pm
The team held a start of the season parent meeting 11/19/09
in the Roosevelt Commons. The yearly parent meeting is a great time to meet the
Coaches and other parents and get updated on the teams plans and expectations.
Hygiene.
Wrestlers need to shower with soap as soon as possible after
each and every practice or match. Bacteria, and other little nasties need a
moist warm place to grow. Showering with a good soap scrub will deny them a
place to breed and grow. Ringworm and staff are the two most common infections.
During the season referees and coaches will be checking wrestlers for obvious
infections. If your wrestler has a skin rash that is not contagious, you can
have your doctor fill out a WIAA form to show the meet officials and they will
be allowed to wrestle.
Practices
Practice time starts 25 minutes after school gets out and
goes on for 2 hours. Normal practice time is 3-5pm. On days that school gets
out early, we have practice early at 1-3pm. Wrestlers should bring CLEAN
shorts, T shirt, wrestling shoes, big water bottle every day. Coach likes kids
to stay in the room and not be running out to fill up their bottle every few
minutes. Practices are every day during the season. No practice on
Thanksgiving, Christmas, New years day, Sundays, days that we have a tournament
or a match. 8:30-10:30 AM for Saturday and vacation practices.
We do practice on the day after Thanksgiving, the day after
Christmas, winter vacation days, etc. Coach doesn't hold grudges but he does
like his team to be at practice. Wrestlers who show up to practice are more
likely to move up the depth chart. Coach mentioned the winter break period as
an especially crucial time for wrestlers to attend practice and where a lot of
great learning and growth take place. If the family is out of town during the
holidays, then so be it, but Coach mentioned that just like any other varsity
sport, he expects wrestlers to be in the gym during the season.
RHS Sports Boosters
Frank Leeds, the wrestling team booster representative, explained that the RHS Sports Boosters is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting sports at Roosevelt. Donations made to the boosters with wrestling written on the check will be credited to the wrestling team's account with the boosters.
The Boosters provide invaluable support for the wrestling team, helping us purchase uniforms, scoring devices, interval clocks, etc. Items purchased by the boosters are school property so any uniforms etc. purchased with booster funds must be returned to the school at the end of the season.
Being a member of the Boosters brings two major
responsibilities; the Spring Booster Sports Auction and taking our turn manning
the concession booth for basketball games. Frank will have more on these topics
at a later date.
Roosevelt Takedown Tournament November 28th, 2009
Roosevelt hosts an early season Takedown Tournament in the main gym on Saturday November 28th, 2009.
In a Takedown Tournament, points are given for take downs
and subsequent falls and then the wrestlers are stood backup and go after a
takedown again. The pace is fast and wrestlers get a great chance to
practice this critical skill. 10 teams from around the region will be in
attendance and three mats will be filled with action. Wrestlers will be
put into groups of 4 and everyone will wrestle 3 - 2 minute matches with
45 minutes between match.
Takedown Tournament Bake Sale Fundraiser
The Takedown Tournament is our major wrestling fund raiser for the year and a large part of our profits come from the bake sale. All RHS families should bring baked goods to sell at the bake sale. Roosevelt volunteers will be needed to run the bake sale table, help with scoring tables and cleanup.
Bake Sale -Volunteers are needed to take shifts selling the baked goods from 8:00am throughout the day.
Scoring Table - Volunteers are needed to take shifts running the clock and score board.
Hospitality Table – Volunteers are needed to keep the Hospitality Table for visiting coaches stocked with coffee and treats through lunch.
Laura Strauss ( Laura@nlwinc.com ) has graciously agreed to coordinate the takedown tourney volunteers. Please contact her and sign up to help with the Takedown Tournament.
