Frequently Asked Questions

New Wrestlers!

If you are a sophomore or a freshman just entering Roosevelt High School this fall, now is the time to start thinking about joining the wrestling team. Wrestling is a fun, no cut individual sport with a supportive team atmosphere. There is lots of great competition available for both experienced wrestlers and newcomers alike.  Whether you are 105 lbs, 145 lbs or 275 lbs, there is a spot on the team for you.

If you are new to wrestling, we look forward to seeing you in November. Wrestling is a tough sport, but it is great fun and everyone is welcome. Freshmen and Sophomores are especially encouraged as the sooner you get involved, the better you will become.

If you compete in other sports during the year, Wrestling is a great way to have fun and keep in great shape during the off-season. Whether you play Football or Lacrosse, Cross Country or Judo, or are just looking for conditioning or coordination, there are lots of advantages to keeping fit with wrestling

Wrestling Practice Starts - Monday November 16th, 2009

The first day of wrestling practice will be Monday November 16th, 2009.
Be ready to work out. Coach always says with that tricky smile, that kids don't need to be in shape before the season starts; he will get everyone in shape the first few weeks of the season. Don't fall into the trap, it's so much better to be working out now. :)

Weight Management

Keeping wresters safe and healthy is the top priority. The bad old days of excessive weight loss are gone. The WIAA  Weight Management program now certifies that all wrestlers maintain minimum body fat percentages and that they don't loose too much weight each week.  More...

Gear - What will I need for Wrestling practice ?

Shoes are available at any good sporting goods. Big 5, 3GI.  There are also are plenty of outlets for wrestling equipment on line. More on wrestling Shoes...
No reccomendations for where to purchase, but here is a google search for a wild green shoe that some wrestlers have...Google Search
You will need a jock strap or tight fitting briefs. BOXERS WILL NOT DUE.
Make sure you have your own water bottle. The coach is not a big fan of leaving the room to go and get a drink of water. Make it a quart size at least. There was one wrestler who kept a gallon bottle with him.
You may want to purchase one or two knee pads (keep it simple. There are some wild knee pads out there).

You will be issued head gear, but you may want to purchase your own. Coach suggests that you wait until after the season starts and get opinions from other wrestlers as to which brand of head gear to buy.
Keep a few t shirts and shorts in your locker so that you have more than one on hand. They get sweaty quick. Second hand stores have t shirts for $.99.
You will be issued a team Singlet, Sweatshirt and T-shirt. The Team Singlet and Sweatshirt must be returned to Coach at the end of the season.
