Weight Management
Weight Management
Keeping wresters safe and healthy is the top priority. The WIAA Weight Management program certifies that all wrestlers maintain minimum body fat percentages of 7% for males and 12% for females. In cases where athete's are trying to loose weight, the program limits an athlete’s weight loss to less than 1.5% per week. Unsafe weight loss practices are prohibited and good nutrition is promoted.
Athletes will be tested at the start of the season and certified for the minimum weight classes that they can compete in. These certification are not the athlete’s best weight class, just the minimum weight class that they can compete at. The testing will consist of a specific gravity urine test to make sure that the athlete is hydrated as well as a caliper test to measure the athlete’s body fat percentage.
The RHS wrestling squad will all take the Weight management test at the same time. Last year it was done early in the season after school at Blanchet in coordination with the other local teams.
How to prepare for Specific Gravity Test
Nothing special needs to be done, but the athlete’s body's need to be hydrated before the test.1. Eat a normal balanced diet emphasizing foods with high water content such as fruits and vegetables.
2. Avoid foods and/or supplements that may contribute to water loss such as: chocolate, soft drinks, coffee, and creatine for at least 24-48 hours.
3. Avoid vigorous physical activities that cause excessive sweating for at least 24 hours.
4. Consume plenty of fluids; at least eight to twelve 8 - ounce glasses per day for several days prior to testing.
